Tennessine (atomic number 117) was discovered in 2010. Scientists in Russia and the US were able to make it by smashing other elements together until they got a new atom. All of the recent elemental discoveries were made by this or other similar means – scientists are fairly certain that we’ve found all the naturally-occurring elements, so the only way to find new elements is to make new ones!
