      Hey Amy!
      .
So when you say material do you mean a chemical? Or physically somthing like a material we use for stuff? (Ill answer both!)
      .
So chemical wise one of the worst things i can think of that humans have made intentionally is the chemical called VX. VX is a nerve agent which once exposed causes every muscle in your body to begin spasming and quickly causes heart failure. The chemical itself works by interacting and blocking an enzyme our bodies produce called acetylcholinesterase (think of it as our muscles “OFF” switch, if its blocked it means our nerves keep firing which is what causes the spasm).

Now material wise i guess the most damaging material we previpusly used in every day life was asbestos. So asbestos was orginally not a bad material (more on this in a bit!) And had alpt of fantastic properties: sound absorption, heat resistance to fire, was a fantastic electricity insulator and was cheap enough to be affordable for everyone!
      .
However we know living in the 21st century of the dangers the fibres that this material now possess and deaths attributed to this material are still increasing to this day decades after we stoped using it! The diseases it causes are asbestosis (a thickening of the walls of your lungs which reduce the ability of oxygen to pass through the lungs) and several types of lung cancers.

Hopefully i understood your question correctly and if not please leave a comment ☺.
