  Of course they were real! We have plenty of evidence for their existence, including fossils that can be accurately dated thanks to the properties of the minerals in them, as well as fossilised footsteps and even evolutionary history that matches up with what we see in the fossil record (which includes many “transitionary forms” between dinosaurs and birds).
