We aren’t giving them feelings – we are giving them the ability to do subtle actions. The thing about computers is that they normally deal in absolutes – is the oven on 200 degrees, is the power switched on, have I signed the register at school? They don’t do subtle actions well, like “is the pizza burned”, “am I using too much electricity”, “am I doing well at school”?
      .
Neural networks are a new technology of doing just that. We give the computer hundreds of thousands of examples (Here are 500,000 undercooked pizzas, here are 400,000 burnt ones. here are 20,000 households of these different sizes using too much electricity, here are 20,000 households trying to save. Here are 1,000,000 pupils doing well in school, and here’s 1,000,000 who are struggling). We then use some maths to simulate neurons (like in your brain) turn on and off. And then (in theory!) the computer can answer that question when you give it a new pizza, household or school.
      .
But we have never taught it feelings!
