  I think the internet was first invented to exchange ideas between different scientists, and then grew massively from there (and it really wouldn’t have been as fun to use in the early years – very technical computer console-based access only I imagine). So I suppose the answer to the second part is to build on what’s already there and improve it over the years? 🙂
